The Psychologist Information and Referral Service (PIRS) To recieve a referral for a psychologist please call 1-800-251-2937
PIRS is a community service provided by the San Diego Psychological Association, a chapter of the California Psychological Association. Psychologists who serve on PIRS have doctoral level training and are licensed to provide psychological services in the State of California by the Board of Psychology. PIRS has provided referrals and information to the San Diego community for more than twenty years. The service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. However, PIRS is not an emergency service. The general public, health care providers and other professionals are encouraged to freely utilize this service. Initial contact is through an answering service. The psychologist on call will personally respond to all requests within a few hours. Requests for information regarding issues related to psychology are typically satisfied by the psychologist on call although the caller may be directed to additional resources. A caller is given the names of at least three psychologists, or a community agency as appropriate, when necessary psychological services are requested. The services provided by psychologists are frequently reimbursed by health insurance and managed care plans. Many providers work on a sliding fee scale. Some providers will also accept Medi-Cal and Medicare.
Psychology 2000
Psychology 2000 is a community service project organized by the San Diego Psychological Association (SDPA). A group of our members have agreed to volunteer their time to provide free psychological services to people who cannot afford them. In order to qualify for this project, you must meet the following criteria:
-
No health insurance that would pay for mental health services.
-
Limited financial resources.
-
Paying for these services would create a severe financial hardship.
-
Not eligible for MEDI-CAL or Medicare, which would pay for these services.
-
Willing to provide one hour of volunteer community service for each hour of psychological services you received.
Acceptance into this program also depends on the availability of a psychologist who can provide the kind of services you may need. If you need psychological services and think you may qualify for this project, please call (800) 251-2937.
Please Note: All services are provided by independently licensed psychologists, not by The San Diego Psychological Association. SDPA is soley responsible for coordinating this project and does not assume responsibility or liability for guaranteeing the quality of the individual psychologists who have volunteered and service in the project. This is not a crisis intervention service. It may take several weeks to access these services.
If you are in crisis, please call the Crisis Hot Line at 800.479.3339
